Which deuter products can be used as hand luggage/ carry-on luggage?

Unfortunately, there is no international standard for hand luggage sizing. Each airline stipulates its own restrictions. But usually, they are in line with IATA (International Air Transport Association) recommendations. Which is why we’ve decided to base ours on these too.

IATA recommends that the total sum of the length, width and height should not exceed 115cm. Usually the maximum dimensions permitted are 56 cm × 45 cm × 25 cm (according to IATA guidelines) or 55 cm × 40 cm × 20 cm.

deuter has therefore opted to use 55 cm x 35 cm x 23 cm so that we comply with as wide a range of airlines as possible. If a deuter bag or pack conforms with carry-on dimensions, this will be stipulated in the product features.

Tip: always check luggage restrictions for the airline in question

What is ‘smart luggage’?

What is ‘smart luggage’?

And are there any deuter products which need to be registered as such?

Smart luggage is luggage that comes with electronic features like a battery for cell phone charging on the move, or tagging to locate your luggage using GPS, and fingerprint secured locks.

None of deuter’s products need to be declared as smart luggage.

That includes our products that feature NFC tags because these are fitted with passive RFID chips which do not emit a signal. So there are no restrictions when using these as carry-on or hold luggage. It is the same technology used by airlines to track luggage.

And our avalanche backpacks that use the Alpride airbag system are not powered by lithium-ion or lithium polymer batteries, but instead use supercapacitors to store energy in the form of electrostatic fields that then power the electronic air bag compressor.

WHAT COUNTS AS SPECIAL OR OVERSIZED BAGGAGE?

WHAT COUNTS AS SPECIAL OR OVERSIZED BAGGAGE?

Travel luggage is termed as oversized when the sum of its dimensions is more than 158 cm. Examples of this include pushchairs, sports equipment, musical instruments, wheelchairs, or other items that do not fit within the airline’s dimension criteria.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a skateboard, snowboard, or surfboard — sports equipment is always classed as special baggage. These items are not permitted in carry-on luggage because they could potentially be used as a weapon in the cabin. So make sure you are fully aware of your airline’s luggage classifications for before you travel.

Can I take out the back system of my backpack for air travel?

Our back systems are not designed to be taken out and put back in, so we would not recommend removing the frame or stays for air travel.

From our experience, removing and installing our back systems yourself is not something that can be done correctly. It could lead to irreparable damage to your backpack.

The recommended load figures for our products are featured on the web pages for that product under the heading Specification > Recommended load.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY LUGGAGE IS DAMAGED BY THE AIRLINE?

First, immediately report the incident to the airline as soon as you notice the damage.

You can then also contact us directly sending photos of the damage, the purchase receipt and manufacturing number.

Using this information, we’ll be able to check whether the damage can be repaired and estimate the costs involved, or whether it cannot be fixed and needs to be replaced.
