From the moment we’re born, nature is a part of us and vice versa. It’s quite literally and metaphorically the air we breathe. And children thrive in the natural world, because they love being out and about, exploring and letting their imagination and creativity run wild. Which is why everyone should venture out and embrace the next adventure — even if kids are still small, can’t walk very far, or the terrain is just too demanding. A child carrier is a comfortable, simple and safe option.

Safety, comfort, and quality - why child carriers cost what they cost

However, the highest levels of safety, quality and carry comfort come at a price. Which goes without saying because child carriers are sophisticated items. They have to withstand heavy loads and adapt to the needs of two different people simultaneously. What’s more, they have to be quality-certified by German inspection body TÜV and comply with sustainability standards. The cost of them can only be spread over three years, because that’s the maximum period a child carrier can be used.

But we’re convinced that our child carriers are worth every cent. However, sustainable consumption is also top of our agenda. Which of course, is only the case if the carrier’s used frequently. Furthermore, the lifespan of the product needs to be maximized through good care, repair and passing it on or selling it once you’re done with it.

For those who only use a baby carrier sporadically or are not yet sure whether they want to buy their own, we have teamed up with a number of partners to set up a free baby carrier rental service.

5 Mountain stations in the Allgäu

We have teamed up with five mountain railways in the Allgäu region to launch a free child carrier rental service. There are 20 deuter child carriers available at the mountain restaurants on Fellhorn, Kanzelwand, Nebelhorn, Walmendingerhorn and Söllereck, which can be borrowed in exchange for an ID card deposit. The high demand shows that we have struck a chord here: in 2020, the 20 available child carriers were rented out a total of 216 times. And that's despite the fact that, due to COVID-19, the mountain railways were only in operation for 232 days.

Tourist information füssen

The child carriers can be borrowed free of charge from the Füssen Tourist Information Office during opening hours. There are three different models to choose from. The number of carriers is limited. Reservations are not essential, but are recommended. You can borrow and test the child carrier for a maximum of one day.

Information on using our deuter child carriers

Our child carriers are suitable for children who can already sit upright independently and hold their head steady – this is usually the case from around eight months of age. In our experience, many children enjoy sitting in the child carrier up to the age of around three and a half years. Our models are designed for a total weight of up to 22 kg: the child may weigh up to 18 kg, and there is additional space for up to 4 kg of luggage.

On our website, you will find detailed instructions on how to adjust the child carrier to your body and important information on how to use it safely. Please take the time to read our safety instructions carefully in advance. If you have any questions, our team and the staff at our child carrier test centres will be happy to help. Please note that our child carrier test centres do not accept any liability.

No, you can borrow the child carriers free of charge after providing your personal details or presenting identification.

To ensure that as many families as possible can enjoy our deuter carriers for a long time, we ask that you handle the child carriers with care. Please also remember to check after use whether there are any personal items left in the pockets of the carrier and whether the carrier is clean and complete (including accessories such as sun roof). The removable chin guard is cleaned after each use by our child carrier test centres to ensure hygiene.

Outdoor activities are becoming increasingly popular, especially in today's world.  It is therefore not surprising that the offer of free deuter children's backpacks has been well received. 
We are therefore currently examining whether and how we can expand our free equipment hire service in the future as part of our 360° Responsibility strategy, so that we can work together with our customers, young and old, to promote responsible consumerism and thus protect resources and the environment.

The fact that equipment rental is a highly relevant topic is also evident from our cooperation with an Alpine Club hut. Here, we offer a small selection of our deuter backpacks for hire free of charge. At the Heidelberger Hütte, which is located on one of the most popular routes for bike tours across the Alps and is an excellent starting point for ski touring in winter, this offer is very popular.
