What is a Protector backpack and when do I need one?

A Protector backpack combines storage space and comfort with an integrated back protector. It is particularly suitable for sports where falls carry an increased risk of injury, such as mountain biking, enduro or downhill.
A back protector must, first and foremost, absorb impacts. That is why we use SHIELD protectors, which are designed to withstand multiple impacts. The protective foam returns to its original shape after an impact, thereby providing protection even in the event of repeated impacts. The back protector absorbs the impact and thus reduces the force of the blow – much like a shock absorber. The shock-absorbing performance of the protector foam exceeds the limits set by the European standard EN 1621-2 for back protectors.

For deuter, it’s about more than just a trendy design: our cycling and MTB backpacks with protectors are tailored to the needs of adventurers. To ensure you’re equipped for every trip, deuter pays close attention to features and workmanship. Here’s what our Protector backpacks offer you:

✔  TÜV/GS-certified back protector made from visco-elastic SC-1 foam (SAS-TEC)
✔  Water-repellent materials: mud splashes, drizzle and the like roll right off your Protector backpack; in heavier rain, the Rain cover provides protection.
✔  Sturdy construction: deuter’s Protector backpacks are made from high-strength woven fabric, designed for use on the trail.
✔  Free from intentionally added PFAS: Since 2020, we have completely avoided the use of PFAS in the manufacture of our products and instead use DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatments, which we select in accordance with the requirements of our chemicals management policy.
✔  Well-thought-out compartment layout with plenty of storage space: Your backpack can hold a lot, yet you can access everything you need in a single movement – for example, via the handy zipped pocket in the hip belt. There’s also plenty of room for a hydration bladder.

Tailored to you and your needs: backpacks with back protectors from deuter

A back protector is recommended for mountain biking, on enduro trails or when riding downhill. You’ll also need a helmet, gloves and cycling shoes, and your valuables need to be stowed away securely. Deuter offers bike backpacks and specialist MTB backpacks with back protectors in various sizes: in the regular fit, as Slim Line (SL), as Extra Long (EL) and as a children’s version (JR). Don’t need back protection for a relaxed evening ride? Then simply remove the protector and carry on using your backpack without it. On strenuous trails, it’s also important to stay hydrated. That’s why all Attack models, including the Attack 8 JR, feature a hydration bladder attachment.

A protector backpack must sit firmly against your back, no matter how rough the descents get. With the Attack model, you can tackle challenging trails, as the TÜV/GS-certified back protector absorbs the impact energy in the event of a fall. The backpack with back protector also impresses with its other features. On your way to the trail, for example, you can conveniently attach your helmet and protective gear to the outside of the backpack. You’ll also find a separate bag for your smartphone, a glasses holder, a Hydration system attachment and other practical features. The handy hip belt, complete with bags, provides additional support and storage space. Should a rain shower come along, you can easily protect your Protector backpack with the included Rain cover.

Protector backpacks to suit your build

The aim of deuter’s Protector backpacks is to minimise injuries in high-risk sports. As they only protect the covered area of the back, the backpack must be tailored to your size. deuter therefore manufactures backpacks in various sizes. For example, we offer Protector backpacks in the Slim Line (SL) range. With their shorter back panel and specially shaped shoulder straps, these are tailored to the female anatomy and the build of shorter people. Taller people between 1.85 and 2 metres, on the other hand, can opt for the Extra Long (EL) version with an extended back panel.
