Hiking with children: child carriers from deuter

Enjoying fantastic mountain views, marveling at centuries-old buildings on a city trip or chasing after the bigger kids on a long forest trail – you can experience all of this with your little ones thanks to deuter baby and child carriers. They are light, practical and above all comfortable.
At deuter, we’ve developed a host of backpacks including child carriers, with a range of sizes to fit your body shape and suit what you want to do. And we’ve also ensured your child’s comfort too. Child carriers have various features that make them ideal for taking young children with you when you’re hiking, strolling through the woods, out in nature or even for everyday life or on a backpacking trip. They differ from each other in terms of weight and which practical features they have. Choose the child carrier that best suits you and your child or baby.

Our advice: You’ll find what you need to know before you head out on your first hike with a child carrier, what age your child should be, and many more useful tips about child carriers in our blog article Hiking with young children (DE).

Advantages of a child carrier

A child carrier should be TÜV-certified for the safety of your toddler, but it must also be comfortable. On longer outings in particular, or on hikes, they need to be able to sit in a hiking baby carrier comfortably and not complain. The seats in the cockpit of deuter child carriers is adjustable, even on the move. Foot loops are also adjustable to suit the child and help keep them securely in their seat. A well-padded seat adds to the comfort too. The Kid Comfort Pro child carrier also has a sunshade (sold separately).

Baby hiking backpacks TÜV approved

At deuter, quality is paramount. The TÜV certification shows that our child carriers are functional and safe. In addition to using materials that are free from chemicals and durable, the best thing about deuter child carriers is the back system for grown-ups. For certification, it must be able to withstand 50,000 load cycles undamaged. And naturally, special attention is paid to the safety of the child. Our baby carrier backpacks have passed critical tests for injuries as a result from falling out or getting jammed in the stand.

These are the safety features of our child carrier backpacks

  • Individually adjustable seat height
  • Adjustable foot loops
  • Safety harness
  • TÜV SÜD testing every two years
  • Sturdy aluminum frame to prevent tipping over when on the ground

Deuter child carrier features for babies and toddlers

  • Side opening to get in and out: When they’re older, kids can climb into the carrier by themselves, while babies and smaller toddlers can be seated through this opening.
  • Comfortable ergonomics: The deuter child carriers have been developed together with a pediatric surgeon. The chin pad, side wings and back of the cockpit create a comfortable, secure seat, and ensure an age-appropriate seating position.
  • Variable seat position: The higher the seat goes, the wider the seat padding. This ensures a natural slightly splayed ‘frog leg’ seating position for the child, and the lower the seat the narrower the width for a more upright sitting position.
  • Mobile foot loops: Children like to wriggle about. And these foot loops help them do that safely. It maintains blood circulation and also prevents them from standing up in the carrier.

The Benefits to the person carrying our child carriers

  • Various fits
  • Back systems that can be adjusted to the length of the person’s back
  • Padded waist belt (with built-in hip fin pockets - depending on the model)
  • Very breathable and lightweight

The back systems used for deuter child carriers

A baby or child carrier can help you extend your walks into hikes, over several kilometers. Our sophisticated Aircomfort back system features an ergonomically shaped mesh back to keep your back well ventilated on the trail. A lightweight spring steel frame in the Aircomfort baby hiking backpacks distributes the load effectively. The Aircomfort back system is used for the deuter Kid Comfort and Kid Comfort Pro child carriers.

The Lite back system on the other hand, is conceived for parents looking for a compact, lighter-weight carrier. The back system weighs less than 2500 grams. But it’s still built for carrying light to moderate loads in comfort. The direct connection between the back system and the frame, and the wrapping hip fins, results in the weight of the load being evenly distributed between the shoulders and hips. For total loads of up to 22 kg. The Kid Comfort Active child carrier uses the deuter Lite back system, and also comes in a Slim Line (SL) model for women or adults with a slimmer, shorter build.

Other features of the Kid Comfort & Kid Comfort Pro

  • VariSlide back length adjustment: The back length has a slide adjustor to set it at the exact back length of the person carrying it.
  • Energy saving: Mobile VariFlex hip fins make the Kid Comfort carriers very easy and comfortable to carry.
  • Plenty of stow space: Generous compartments and pockets offer plenty of space for longer hikes.

Extras on the Kid Comfort Pro

The Kid Comfort Pro child carrier has everything you need for enjoying nature together with your baby or toddler. A built-in sunshade keeps little ones well protected during the summer months. It’s quick and easy to erect. A mirror that stows away in the hip fin pocket allows parents to check on their little passenger to see what they’re up to. And to ensure you can carry everything you need for longer adventures, there’s a little day pack included that can be clipped to the front of the carrier to keep essentials close by, or for a quick change of diapers. Further features of the Kid Comfort Pro:

  • Two grab handles for secure handling
  • Collapsible design for transportation
  • A zip around hydration compartment for bladders up to 3 liters
  • Adjustable chest strap and other straps
  • Pockets on the waist belt

Looking to share your love of hiking with the youngest members of your family and want a deuter child carrier to help you do so? But you aren’t sure what age they are suitable from?

deuter child carriers are designed for babies and toddlers who can remain seated independently and have good head control. In most cases, this is from 8 months of age, but varies from child to child.

Most children will be happy to be carried in a hiking backpack up to the age of 3 and a half years. How tall they are is of less relevance here, as all deuter child carriers have adjustable seat heights. But for weight, the carriers can take a maximum of up to 22 kg (child and belongings) which means even older children can still be carried in them. The carriers have been inspected up to this weight by TÜV and conform to EU standards.

All of deuter’s child carriers are designed for hiking. They are TÜV inspected and have a sturdy aluminum frame, adjustable foot loops and safety seat belts. The back systems used in these carriers are the same as those used in our hiking backpacks because of their carrying comfort and effective weight distribution qualities.

The deuter Kid Comfort and Kid Comfort Pro carriers have the Aircomfort Sensic Vario mesh back system, which distributes the load of the child evenly and keeps your back well ventilated. The Kid Comfort Active features the lighter weight deuter Lite back system and is also available in a Slim Line (SL) model, which is better suited to women and those with a smaller build.

Types of child carriers

Cloth wraps and baby carriers have the advantage of keeping your child close to your body. The lightweight material and easy handling make them ideally suited to short walks, but on longer hikes that closeness can soon turn into a sweaty disadvantage. With these wrap-style baby carriers, the weight of the load is mostly on the shoulders. And for little ones, the view is more restricted than in a carrier.

So a backpack-style carrier is basically the better option for hiking. A carrier backpack might be heavier, but the load is more evenly distributed, which makes it less tiring to carry over longer distances. And for your child, the seating is more comfortable, and they have a better view of their surroundings.
