Visit deuter School
Living conditions in Nepal can only get better if education, healthcare and sanitation are improved. And the standard of living can only be raised from within the country itself. In the past, many school-age children in Nepal were denied basic education because schools were unaffordable for many, or simply too far away. Nepalhilfe’s school projects can help change that. In addition, we want to give something back to the Nepalese and the country, which is still a popular destination for many trekkers and expeditions.
deuter has been supporting Nepalhilfe financially every year since 2013 and donates backpacks, sleeping bags and accessories as required. With the help of deuter, the Shanti Nikunja School in Kathmandu was newly built. At the start we donated about 30,000 € for the construction of the building as well as 300 school backpacks and pencil cases. Since then, the locals sometimes talk about the "deuter school" in the heart of Kathmandu. An e-learning center for learning foreign languages was also set up with our financial support.
Projects such as the newly built health center in Kubinde (about 80 kilometers east of Kathmandu) were realized and completed in 2021. It replaces the previously existing facility, which was completely destroyed by the earthquake in 2015. In addition, an elementary school is being built in Siranchour for about 110,000 €. Another project is a day care center for people with physical and mental disabilities in Lubhu. It was inaugurated in early summer 2021.
In July 2022, deuter will start a new school project in Nepal. For the next three years, we will support another school project in Nepal in Chharka in the Dolpo region with 10,000 euros annually. Besides the buildings, which are co-financed by us, there are many things that are needed for teaching and schooling like pens, paper or learning material.
Dolpo is a very remote and high altitude region in the northwest of Nepal, bordering Tibet, where there are no roads. The village of Chharka is located at an altitude of 4300 meters. From Katmandu to Chharka it is about 159 kilometers - due to the lack of infrastructure a day's journey by jeep. Nepalhilfe Beilngries has been planning and financing the construction of an efficient low-energy house as a school for the children of the village for almost two years - taking into account the often difficult local conditions such as infrastructure and procurement of building materials. Animals such as donkeys and buffaloes are used to transport the material. This is the only way to get the required resources there cross-country, over stony paths high up to more than 4000 meters. The existing school is only open from April to October; it is too cold in the winter months.
The new school is scheduled to open in 2024 and will serve not only as a place for students to attend classes, but also as a place for the residents of Chharka to stay.
