The development of the first bike backpack

In 1990, Andi Heckmair set off from his house in Oberstdorf with the aim of crossing the Alps by bike. At his side: The world's first bike backpack, designed by Andi Heckmair personally and implemented by Deuter: the Bike I. At that time it had 24 liters, was simple and light, and already had a ventilation system for the back. To date, we have retained the tradition of the backpack, and have improved a lot over the years. In the heart, however, the Bike I has always remained a Heckmair design - developed for the first transalp by mountain bike.

Bike I 20

Andi Heckmair appreciates the new Bike I and takes it along on his excursions.

The alpine classic in the original colors of 1990

Now the original from 1990 is available again - only better! The new Bike I captivates with technical refinements such as smartphone bag, helmet holder or integrated seat mat. The colors in retro chic are a real eye-catcher and bring the heroic history of the backpack to the fore.

Small and compact: The Bike I 14

The wide selection within the Bike I series leaps up trend-conscious biker hearts: From 14 to 20 liters, colorful or subtle, maximum ventilated or with sporty fit, there is something for everyone. This model is the smallest model with 14 liters - and nevertheless performs like the big ones.

Spacious and versatile: The Bike I 20 and 18 SL

The newly created original not only makes a difference in the crossing of the Alps, he also acts sovereignly on a day trip, in the countryside and in the city. The Bike I 20 offers all comfort with useful inner compartments, integrated rain cover and compatibility with the Deuter 3 liter hydration system. The SL version is especially adapted to the female anatomy and thus also fits athletes with a shorter back.

Extra space and best ventilation: The Bike I Air EXP 16

Unlike his brothers, this backpack has a Deuter Aircomfort back system that provides maximum ventilation thanks to the mesh back construction. Its expandable volume allows 4 liters of additional storage space - if required. Otherwise the Bike 1 Air EXP 16 makes itself quite slim.

"This is a very old-school design: a single large main compartment, and a smaller external one with zipped and non-zipped pockets and two elasticated side pockets. Throw in a chest and wide mesh waist strap, Deuter's 'Airstripes' padded back, a stow-away rain cover and the ability to carry a hydration reservoir and this covers all the bases. The result is a simple, easy-to-use and comfortable backpack with decent reflective details on the back if not the sides. And our experience of similar Deuter bags suggests it'll last for years."

We use this material in two different strengths – the 600D Ripstop Polyester is a more robust version of the Super Polytex, and the 225D Ripstop Polytex it’s finer variation. Both materials feature a PU coating with a water protection of 2.000mm WS.
This slightly lighter material is characterized by a very tight and smooth weave. This increases the abrasion value and its repellent attributes against snow and dirt. Due to the smooth polyamide filaments, the material reaches a higher gloss level. Used with a PU coating.
